Boulder Beer MoJo Risin’

MoJo Risin’ It’s an interesting interesting time to be a beer guy. World wide hop shortages have left craft brewers scrambling to figure out how they can continue making beer. Prices are rising. And the worlds lightest beer has been released.

Luckily all is not doom and gloom. The Boulder Beer Company has released a limited edition version of their MoJo IPA called MoJo Risin’. According to the label they’ve added 1/2 a ton of additional malt and twice the Amarillo hops. I’ll have to take their word for all that but I can say this is a BIG beer. The beer pours from the bottle a clear deep gold with a nice off-white head and the piney hop aroma is noticeable from a good distance away. The initial taste is hoppy, with the pine continuing and some grapefruit underneath, but what comes as a surprise is how much the malt comes through. Overall the flavor is much sweeter than I expected, and that sweetness sticks with you through the finish and becomes an odd bitter/sweet aftertaste. While this isn’t entirely unpleasant, and it masks the high alcohol (10%!) well, it could make it difficult for me to have more than one or two of these.

Final thoughts? Recommended if you can find it if only for a unique take on the American Double IPA.
