Get That Song Out of My Head!

By Gilgemesh • Mar 18th, 2008 • Category: Rants

Warning: This topic may cause horrid music to become irrevocably stuck in your cerebrum.

The purpose of this post is to try to purge the latest song to get stuck in my head. I do not intend to discuss those songs that we occasionally sing in the shower or while we drive, Werewolves of London by Warren Zevon comes to mind though. Nor do I intend to discuss a rare gem from a beloved musician, such as Laughing Gnome by David Bowie. A fantastic song showing the first signs of Bowie’s transition, from conformist, to The Man Who Sold the World, to full on Ziggy, that sticks to the mind for a bit after you listen to it. No, what I am referring to is the catchy tune that gets stuck in your head and you can’t get out.

Now that the warning and preamble are out of the way, let’s get to the meat of this issue.

For the past few weeks I have had Death or Glory by the Clashrunning through my head. Now, I like the Clash. Love some of their stuff, Rudie Can’t failGuns of BrixtonRadio Clash, but this was never one of my favorites. And now it’s been stuck in my head for weeks. Before this it was Stars by Hum. Before that Bubble Toes by Jack Johnson. Bubble Toes? What the hell. So, I started looking at other songs that have been stuck in my head. And I found some really horrible tunes. Here’s a list of some of the scariest:

Yeah, you see that right, not only is there some frightening stuff up there, but there’s the former Mr. Julia Roberts. Although, If I had a boat is a nice catchy tune. Funny even. So, now you have a song in your head. What happens when you have a song stuck in your head, but you don’t know the name?  Well, that I can help you with. Here is a place that let’s you record some of the tune and other folks will tell you what it is.  Or songtapper, recommended by killerstartups.com, but Artificial inteligence claims it doesn’t work.  However, he’s part of the evil Microsoft regime and can’t be trusted. Now that I have hopefully gotten one of those nasty tunes stuck in your head, I shall tell you how to get it out. Next week.

Just kidding. This is what I did. I made a list of those songs we sing in the shower, or the car, and I began to listen to them. Now, I no longer have Death or Glory stuck in my Head. However, I do have Come Sail Away by Styx. Well, at least it’s the Eric Cartman version from South Park. Perhaps, I’ll run through Friggin in the Riggin by the Sex Pistols a few times. That ought to help.

Got a song stuck in your head?  Is it worse than one of mine?  Post it to the comments below and find out.

  1. Without fail, every time I have a song stuck in my head all I need to do is sing “Killing Game” by Skinny Puppy and I’m good. It’s damn near a miracle.

  2. weird. that Barbie song was also stuck in my head for the longest time back when. I never knew any of the words, so I’d just hum until I got to “I’m a Barbie girl” (which I’d sing softly so people wouldn’t think I was gay).

  3. Damn you Med. Now I got “Killing Game” stuck in my head. And I’m worried I’m going to have to listen to a crappy song to get it out.

  4. i find that sunshine of your love will kill any crap song. just the riff alone…

  5. Oh, yes. Excellent choice Schinders. I would also add in the Smoke on the Water riff. Damn good stuff for getting junk music to go away.

  6. If Smoke on the Water is what you need, might I recommend
