One of the most horrible things about the past writer’s strike has been that most people have had to go without the Series “24“, with no chance to see a new episode until 2009. Well the simplest solution to those that need their “Jack” fix is to take a little vacation, all the way to Japan. There you might be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of him on TV. No, not Kiefer Sutherland, but Jack Bauer shiling for CalorieMate (in the drop down, pick the 2nd line…. the first one ending in CM). You probably have seen the first of these years ago, but did you know they do 2 or 3 commercials a year with him? Now you know what he’s doing the remaining 364 days out of the year.

Of course he isn’t the first to go over to Japan to do commercials, its along standing tradition with “respectable” US Stars, following in the footsteps of not only Nicolas Cage, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Christina Aguilera, but also Orson Welles, Francis Ford Coppola, and Audrey Hepburn. In fact there have probably been more stars in Asian Commercials, then in US ones (not counting sports stars). A surprisingly endless list of them can be found here, and just click “previous entries” until you’ve lost all respect for your favorite stars (even the Simpsons made it over there!!!)

You can check out Adrants for ads from every country on every subject and in every style. but the Japan ones still come out on top. Although while spending sometime over there, I managed to catch one commercial that made me a little frightened to turn on the TV for awhile, I think its best called WTF??? (believe it or not, its for a Real Estate Developer)

Note:Supposedly the Japanese myth is the “tanuki” or Raccoon Dog do not suffer from blue balls, but their balls are so big, that they can “fly”. Now if I can only figure out which Japanese myth is the reason why I keep finding a Dust Buster in my bathroom.

tanuki
